As someone who listens to country music a decent bit I immediately caught the lyric change. And I, like you, also wondered if / assumed that the change was either requested by Ford or, at a minimum, done on their behalf by FOX. And I agree 100% that it comes across as making Ford look cowardly.

I don't think Ford is "weak" for censoring out the word Chevy during the song. Perhaps they just didn't want to give free advertising to a competitor since they are a sponsor of the show. I see nothing wrong with that.
